How to Install Microsoft Office for Macintosh

Microsoft offers an Office 365 subscription for current Bethany students. To obtain and install Office for your Macintosh computer, first visit this website:

http://www.office.com/getoffice365

This will take you to the Microsoft Office 365 website. Once the page loads, enter your Bethany email address in the form, and then click the Get Started button. (Note that you must enter your address as first initial/last name @ blc.edu. For example, jmoeller@blc.edu):

Next, the website will ask if you are a teacher or a student. Click on the “I’m a student” button to continue:

The website will then send an email with a verification link to your email address. (Note that it may take a few minutes for the email to arrive.) Proceed to your Bethany email account and click on the verification link in the email:

The verification link will take you a sign-up form on the Microsoft website, where you will enter your name, date of birth, and set a password for your Office account. Fill out the form and then click the Start link below the form. Please make sure to store your password in a safe place! From time to time Office may ask you to sign in again, and you will need this password.

(Once you have filled out the form, you may see another form inviting you to send invitations to other BLC email address. Feel free to skip this form.)

The Microsoft website will then create your Office account, which may take a few minutes. Once the account creation is complete, you will arrive at the main Office 365 website, which allows you to install Office 365 on your computer. Click on the Install button to download the Office installer file:

The installer is about 1.5 gigabytes in size, so it may take some time to download.

After the installer has finished downloading, navigate to your Mac’s Downloads folder and double-click on the installer file to begin the installation:

(It is possible your Mac will claim that Office cannot be installed because it is from an unidentified developer. To fix this problem, go to System Preferences, and then to the Security & Privacy category. You should see a message informing you that the Office installer was blocked from opening because it is not from an identified developer. Click on the Open Anyway button to resume the installation.)

Once the installer launches, follow the default prompts:

When prompted, enter your password:

The installation will then begin. Depending on the speed of your Mac, it can take upwards of ten minutes for Office to be fully installed.

Once the installation is finished, you can launch the Office applications by going to your Mac’s Applications folder and double-clicking on the appropriate icon.
