* Jesus Calls Us         C.F. Alexander (1852) 87.87. STUTTGART (ELH 87)

1 Jesus calls us; o’er the tumult
Of our life’s wild, restless sea,

Day by day His sweet voice soundeth, Saying, "Christian, follow Me."

2 As of old Saint Andrew heard it
By the Galilean lake,

Turned from home and toil and kindred, Leaving all for His dear sake.

3 Jesus calls us from the worship Of the vain world’s golden store,

From each idol that would keep us, Saying, "Christian, love Me more."

4 In our joys and in our sorrows, Days of toil and hours of ease,

Still He calls, in cares and pleasures, "Christian, love Me more than these."

5 Jesus calls us; By Thy mercies, Savior, make us hear Thy call;

Give our hearts to Thine obedience, Serve and love Thee best of all.

Text Box:

* The Collect for St. Andrew’s Day:

Almighty God,
who gave such grace to your apostle Andrew
that he readily obeyed the call of your Son Jesus Christ, and brought his brother with him: Give us,
who are called by your holy Word,
grace to follow Him without delay,
and to bring those near to us into His gracious presence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

* Advent Tells Us Christ Is Near

1 Advent tells us Christ is near; Christmas tells us Christ is here.

In Epiphany we trace
All the glory of His grace.

2 Then three Sundays will prepare For the time of faithful prayer,

That, with hearts made penitent, We may keep a faithful Lent.

3 Holy Week and Easter then Tell who died and rose again:

O that happy Paschal day! “Christ is ris’n indeed,” we say.

4 Yes, and Christ ascended, too, To prepare a place for you;

So we give Him special praise after those great forty days.

5 Then He sent the Holy Ghost On the day of Pentecost,

With us ever to abide:
God, our Comfort, by our side.

6 Last of all, by grace we sing Glory to our God and King,

Glory to the One in Three, Glory to the Trinity.

Katherine Hankey, 1834-1911, alt.   /  77. 77 ORIENTIS PARTIBUS (ELH 388)
