Overn is an active member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Mankato, MN, serving over the years as Deacon, Usher, School Board member, and money counter.

Teaching Philosophy

Service and Engagement:

We are God’s hands at work in the world. As such, our first responsibility is to use the talent and insight we’ve been given by God to find ways to creatively serve others.

My goal is to equip students with the tools and knowledge necessary for them to influence culture through their active participation in the arts and design.

Additional Campus Responsibilities

Overn has served the college in a number of roles, including Faculty Chair and Secretary, Chair of the Fine Arts and CVA divisions, Chair of the Studio Art and Graphic Design departments, and as the Chair of numerous ad hoc and other committees over the last thirty years. He has also served as a judge for the Speechless Film Festival, a captain for a number of Bethany Institutional Assessment and Accreditation Teams, a faculty representative on the Christ in Media Institute, and was even the commencement speaker in December 2018.

Biography

Overn was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming and moved several times during childhood, growing up mostly in the western suburbs of Minneapolis. Over the years he’s spent time living in Madison, WI, Savannah, GA, Dallas, TX, and Madison Lake, MN, where he currently lives with his wife Laurie. They have two grown children. He has taught at Bethany from 1991 to 1993, and continuously since 1997.
