Religion Major

In Bethany’s religion major, you will examine religion in the context of history, sociology, and philosophy. You will also learn through rigorous study of ancient texts. The framework of our major assumes the perspective of confessional Lutheranism rooted in the Reformation heritage of Christ Alone. In this way our major is distinct from other religious studies programs in which religion is viewed primarily from a psychological, sociological, and anthropological perspective.

Through your studies you will gain a deep understanding of Lutheran doctrine and tradition, the broader Christian tradition, and the accurate and fair comparison of that tradition with other major world religions. You will also develop necessary critical thinking, research skills, and an understanding of other cultures and religious perspectives. Many employers in today’s global economy desire these skills. Additionally, the religion major provides a solid foundation for future studies in a variety of fields such as history, law, the social sciences, literature, and public administration. Further career training is an option for students seeking jobs in business, government, education, journalism, and counseling.
