J. Angelique Johnson grew up in the foothills of Colorado where she draws much of her material. Her works have appeared in Mason’s Road, Fairfield University Online Literary Journal, Soviet Peaches: a Literary Magazine, and was an Honorable Mention for CALYX Journal’s 2011 Tenth Annual Lois Cranston Memorial Poetry Prize. She has also been a recipient of both the Minnesota State Arts Board/Artist Initiative Grant and the PLRAC/McKnight Emerging Artist Grant, has written and published over a dozen children’s non-fiction titles for Coughlan Companies, and is an active member of the Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP), as well as a professional south central Minnesota women’s writers group.
Johnson’s classroom is a friendly, collaborative environment where she encourages students to ask questions, submit complaints, and discuss what is or is not working for them and why they think that is. She emphasizes that anyone who’s interested and willing to work can learn to write effectively, and she takes an active interest in students’ thoughts and opinions simply by taking them seriously – their classroom discussions, questions, topics, and essays. Her environment, she says, is a safe place to make mistakes, learn from these mistakes, celebrate achievements, and foster a lifetime of learning.
