Case: Facing a huge budget crisis, the state of Minnesota is eyeing the funds from its well-known tobacco settlement as a source of money to cover its looming deficit. When the settlement was won most of the funds were dedicated to treating tobacco-related illnesses and to establishing smoking prevention programs. But now this money will be used instead for other purposes unrelated to health and smoking. Consider the morality of this diversion, especially in view of the fact that tobacco companies, in order to continue paying this money, must increase sales of their products, mostly in third world countries.
