Exercise in Autonomy by Matt Meilner
This piece was actually an extended installation artwork in which Matt Meilner isolated himself within a box, a box that he could not escape from without assistance. Completely isolated and helpless for an hour at a time, he created art in his space. He repeated this process four times and the designs on the walls evolved with each hour. The box was then located in a gallery with a very obvious camera placed above it. The sounds of his painting were played through a speaker inside the box and LCD screens played back the videos of the isolation sessions. This created a very strong illusion of the artist being in the box during the gallery reception. Only upon walking to the second level and looking down into the box did you realize his absence.
