The Ylvisaker Fine Arts Center serves as the campus art gallery. Its walls
are home to an ever-changing collection of artwork; the lobby is frequented
by sculpture and other works of art. Each month, a new guest artist displays
a portfolio. Sometime during the exhibit, the artist gives a public lecture
on the meaning and relevance of the art.
The last month of each semester is reserved for the Student Art Show, when
students have on opportunity to display their work. Each student enrolled in
an art class is required to submit at least one work for the show, but many
students choose to display several. The works are judged by the Art Department.
Senior studio art majors are required to hold their own gallery
exhibits. This is considered a showcase of academic work and is typically done
for academic credit during the senior year.
Tours
In an effort to expose students to significant artistic works, Bethany offers
several national or international art trips per year. Recently, students have
visited New York City, London, and Paris. A portion of the cost is sponsored by the college.
The tours, ranging from three to 10 days in length, are guided by art department
instructors and professional tour guides. Students receive an academic credit
for their trip participation and corresponding classroom study.
