Question
What is the cost?
Answer
The tuition is $550. Actually, students on campus pay
$1100 to take the class. The college is giving a generous scholarship to all
Lutheran High School students who take the course.
Question
How will this work day by day?
Answer
Each lesson and its assignment will be posted on the
Bethany Calculus website.
Online calculus students will have a schedule to follow. Students should make
use of time at their Lutheran High School to access the Bethany calculus site,
study from their book, work on their assignments, and study for possible quizzes
much like they do for their other classes. Each school will have an on-site
coordinator that will receive and distribute quizzes and tests, fax quiz and
test results, and occassionally fax student assignment work. Students will have
constant access to their teacher by email (and fax and phone). Email will be
aswered within 1 day at the maximum. (usually quicker). Some online "conferences"
are being planned where whiteboarding will be used. This is an online chat technique
where files, graphics, and comments can be shared immediately and there is an
electronic "chalk board" which can be used live. Out hope is that students will
also have internet access at their homes, where their study and access to their
teacher can seamlessly continue.
Question
How much study time should students be engaged
in?
Answer
A general guideline for college study time
is 2 hours of study time for every hour of class time. Calculus is a 5
credit class at Bethany (meets 5 hours per week.) Because this course is
being spread out over an entire school year, that translates into approximately
2.5 hours per week "in class" and about 5 hours per week in study time.
For online students that is a total time spent at school and at home of
about 8 hours per week. Most schools will be having a study period devoted
to their online course work. If this is a 40-minute period and meets 5
times per week, the student would still need to devote another 4-5 hours
per week to studying their calculus. As in any course, there are some lessons
that require more time, and some that will require less. Therefore, the
numbers above are guidelines.
Question
Is there still room?
Answer
We are just beginning to receive inquiries for the 2005-2006 school year.
Registrations are normally limited to 20 per section. It is possible that
this
year two sections will be offered. This decision has not yet been made. Use
the online application form to get your name in as early as possible.
Question
When is the $550 needed and who does it go to?
Answer
$50 should be sent with application form. Checks
should be made out to Bethany Lutheran College. The remaining amount should
be sent before beginning the course in late August.
Question
When/where could the orientation take place?
Answer
We are planning to have orientation sessions in states where students are
enrolled from.. I do not know the details on the exact location and the dates
at this time. We will make a decision on this by the end of July. Watch this
page for details.
Question
Our students wonder where those 5 credits would be accepted other
than BLC.
Answer
The credits are transferable to any college or university. This
is because Bethany is fully accredited with the North Central Association.
(The standard accrediting agency in this part of the United States). Bethany
has never had problems with calculus credits transferring. If the student
earns a C or above (not C-), the credits should transfer. We do need the
assistance and expertise of the high schools to recommend students with
excellent algebra and trigonometry skills who are self-motivated and disciplined
in their study habits.
