Reverend Mark Bartels of Madison, Wisconsin, will deliver the 2015 Commencement Address. Reverend Bartels is a 1979 Bethany Lutheran College associate in arts graduate. He also earned a bachelor's degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato, a master's degree in philosophy from Purdue University, and a master's of theology degree from Bethany Lutheran Theological Seminary.
Bartels is Senior Pastor at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Madison, and has served there for nearly 23 years. He has also served five years as Associate Pastor at King of Grace Lutheran Church in Golden Valley, Minnesota.
Pastor Bartels has been a member of the Bethany Lutheran College and Seminary Board of Regents since 1998. He has also served on various other elected boards for the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) including the Board for Education and Youth and the President's Commission on the Ministry. He is currently the Vice President of the General Pastoral Conference of the ELS. He is also a member of the Board of Regents for Lakeside Lutheran High School in Lake Mills, Wisconsin.
Pastor Bartels is married to his wife of 29 years, Sherri (Griffin) Bartels, a 1983 Bethany graduate. They have been blessed with three sons, Matthew (spouse Danielle (Townsend) Bartels), Jonathan (Bethany class of 2015) (fiancé Catherine Penning), and Nathan. Mark and Sherri are thrilled to be new grandparents to a granddaughter.
