Bethany Speech Team Workshop
Every Speech Team member will tell you the hardest part about the Speech Team is getting started. We use this workshop to help members get a jump on the coming competition year.
What is the Speech Team?
A member on the Bethany Speech Team has the opportunity to compete in a wide range of public speaking events. We are not talking about boring speeches about boring topics! The different events will challenge your critical thinking ability, develop your listening skills, improve your public speaking ability, and promote an emotional connection with your audience. You will have the opportunity to make your audience laugh, cry, and be persuaded.
What is the workshop?
Unlike high school forensics, colleges and universities compete during the entire school year. The first tournament of the year occurs roughly a month after school begins. We need to get our team together as soon as possible. If you want to compete well, you need to start as soon as possible.
The workshop will help you learn about college forensics, the different events, and the way things work on the Bethany Speech Team. We will help you find a topic or piece to start. You will learn new skills and practice them. You will bond with the rest of the team and start the year off strong.
So how does this all work?
You will arrive on campus Tuesday, August 21. You will be moving in before the majority of students arrive on Saturday, August 25. You will move into the dorm room you have been assigned for the year. After that, we will start working toward your competition year for the Speech Team. The team will provide food and transportation during the workshop. More information will be provided when you accept the invitation.
But wait! I can’t get to campus that early! What should I do?
We understand that people still have a few days of summer they would like to enjoy. Membership on the Speech Team does not require that you attend this workshop. There will be an introductory meeting on Monday, August 27. You can attend that meeting to get started. There are always several people who join after school starts, so you will not be alone!
I am interested in the Speech Team, but I don’t know if I am that interested in the Speech Team.
That is completely understandable. Being new to college, you are unsure of what to expect. If you did forensics in high school, I highly recommend trying the workshop. If you enjoyed doing speech in high school, you will really enjoy the Bethany Speech Team.
If you didn’t do forensics in high school, you are still welcome to attend the workshop. If you want to improve your public speaking, nothing will help you more than the Speech Team. If you want to learn leadership skills and be a more active member of your community, you should attend. Communication ability is the number one skill your future employer will want. The Speech Team will help you learn those skills.
Having said that, please understand that it costs money to run the workshop. If you know you are not going to be on the team, please do not attend. If your goal is just to move in early, please do not attend. If you are trying to get away from your parents, you have bigger issues than the Speech Team! Please be respectful of the team. If you have questions about coming, please contact Jon Loging using the information below. Those who attend the workshop but do not actively participate on the Speech Team will have to pay a $200 reimbursement fee.
Wow! You are persuasive! I am coming. What do I have to do?
Very simple. Contact Jon Loging, the Director of Forensics at Bethany. You can reach him by phone or fax at 507-344-7420. You can email him at Jon.Loging@blc.edu. You can also mail your response and send it to 700 Luther Drive, Mankato, MN 56001. Whatever the method, please notify Jon Loging by August 3, 2012.
I have sent you an email/letter/phone message. Now what?
Those who are interested in the workshop will receive more information about moving in, the tentative schedule, and how meals will work. After receiving that information, we will need your final confirmation of your attendance. We will also request more information about you and your Speech Team interests.
We appreciate you taking an interest in the Speech Team. We hope you can participate even if you do not attend the workshop. If you have any questions, please contact Jon Loging and he will take care of anything you need.
