Have a wonderful break! Read a book in your spare time!
Oh, just so you know, there will be a lack of book reviews for the next month or so. I'm working on a paper for a presentation and am deep in the history and life of Lewis Carroll and Alice in Wonderland. Not sure if you're interested, but I can blog on Carroll's biography if I can ever make my way through the thing! (It's not that it's not interesting, I'm just lacking motivation even though I'm in a time crunch. Sound familiar?)
Do you need information on a president's early career? domestic politics? foreign affairs? legacy? If so, look no further than PBS American Experience - The Presidents
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/presidents/35_kennedy/filmmore/ra_privlife.html
This link will take you directly to John F. Kennedy, but if you scroll down a bit, you will see a blue box on the right-hand side of your screen that allows you to select a different president.
You don't need this information for a project? Well then take a gander and learn something!
Faeries of Dreamdark: Blackbringer
By: Laini Taylor
Laini Taylor is a brand-spanking-new author with a fetish for faeries, birds, new ways to curse (that sound fun and not naughty) and for the darkest of boogeymen, the Blackbringer. For some reason I think it took me a few chapters to really get into this book, but when I read the prelude again a second ago I was hooked - maybe that has something to do with the fact I finished it days ago and really enjoyed it. So much so that I can hardly wait for the second book in the series to come out - and she's only writing it now! The horror! We have to wait for her to finish it, send it to her publisher, get it scribbled full of markings and revisions (who knows how many times) before it will go to press! I am not a patient person! Waiting for Harry Potter was awful! So many sleepless nights! Now I have to start all over again! Honestly, I should just wait for an entire series to come out before I read it, but again, the lack of patience thing tends to win.....
Magpie Windwitch (LOVE the name) hunts devils that had been trapped by Bellatrix, the Faeries champion (and queen? sorry, a little tired and no desire to look it up) who has long since disappeared. The devils were put into bottles sealed by the djinn which could not be broken by any being at the time. Then came the humans. Every single time they find a bottle in the ocean (or lake or river or whatever) and open up one of those bottles they let loose a devil - hence Magpie's job to track them down and recapture them. She's a brave soul for only being a hundred! (Faeries can live a loooong time!) Her companions are Crows who help, aid and guide her. And her parents aren't dead - they're trying to preserve the ancient magic of Faeries that is dying out (it is the curse of the faeries to always forget, so when Magpie isn't tracking down devils she's researching old ways of magic).
The magic in this book is fantabulous! I love the glyphs, how the world was created, how the Blackbringer came to be, who he/it really is, the djinn, Batch the scavenger imp, Fade the dragon, Poppy, Talon, Vesper- who claims she's the descendent of Bellatrix (what Magpie accidentally does to her is fabulous!), Snoshti, and Orchidspike - and many more! Then there's the skuldraig: quite an interesting knife - I definitely would not want to possess it unless I knew I was its true owner!
So, to sum it all up: faeries, magic, djinn kings, glyphs (basically spells that can be used individually or combined), imps, devils, good souls, tattered souls, an occassional glance at humans, adventure, scares, highs, lows, an unspoken of romance, you name it it's in here!
Stay tuned for the next adventure to see how Magpie's doing!
Oh, and in the meantime, you can read about Laini's writing status, things on her mind, Laini's Ladies, knitting, and HOT PINK HAIR! Yes, I'm serious!
