CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Introduction to and survey of the historical portions of the Old Testament from the Call of Abraham to the end of the Old Testament era. The course emphasizes the concepts of the promises of God, and faith in those promises, which are ultimately fulfilled in the coming of the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth.

Don't believe everything you read! Read critically. There's lots of wonderful information on the web and in books; there's also lots of junk. Always ask about the author's presuppositions, philosophy, and view of Scripture.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course the student should:

1. Have an overall grasp of the history of Israel from Abraham to the New Testament.
2. Understand how this history relates to God's plan of salvation and to world history.
3. Gain a further knowledge and understanding of the doctrines of salvation, God's providence, Scripture.
4. Gain an appreciation for God's Word and promises as fulfilled in both the Old and New Testaments, especially concerning Jesus Christ, the Savior.

COURSE MECHANICS: The student's final grade will be determined by the total number of points accumulated throughout the semester. Students will be graded on a strict percentage. The point breakdown is approximately as follows:

Daily/weekly assignments (including 4 chapel reviews on OT texts) 140
One oral report with printed outline & powerpoint (5-10 minutes) 75

Also: Each Thursday e-mail me one vocabulary word and definition that was new to you in your reading or from class, and that are helpful in understanding the Old Testament.

If you miss a quiz, you must make it up before the next class session.

CREDIT FOR ATTENDANCE AND GRADING SYSTEM

Regular class attendance is expected and the roll will be taken each class period. If you are sick or have a legitimate reason for missing class (school activity, for example), phone me and leave a message at x429. If you arrive late, you may be counted absent. Please see me at the end of that class hour to explain and to be counted present. Students will receive or lose credit based on attendance.
