BLC baseball is upset in game one, wins game two at UMAC tourney

Duluth, Minn.—The Bethany Lutheran baseball team split a pair of games during day one of the UMAC tournament in Duluth, Minn.

Thursday morning, third-seed Northland (13-15) defeated the second-seeded Vikings 10-8 in 13 innings. Bethany led 1-0 after five innings and then the bats woke up for both schools. Northland scored seven runs in the top-half of the sixth inning, but Bethany answered with five runs of their own—three of them came on a bases-loaded triple by outfielder Justin Schwecke. The Vikings added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh and held an 8-7 lead until Northland managed to tie the game in the top-half of the ninth. The game was locked at 8-8 until Matt Tanneberg’s two-run single lifted Northland to the victory in the thirteenth inning.

Bethany’s Trent Sonnicksen finished with three hits on the game and Schwecke finished with a game-high four RBI—the Vikings committed four errors in the loss.

Late Thursday afternoon the Vikings played their second game of the day—this time versus Martin Luther College (13-18), winning 10-1 and eliminating the Knights from the tournament. The Vikings took an early 5-0 lead and held on for the victory. The Knights committed four errors in the loss.

Jake Blome (2-for-4, three RBI), Jimmy Olson (2-for-3, two RBI), Pete Harstad (3-for-4), Alex Smith (2-for-5, RBI) and Justin Schwecke (2-for-5, two RBI) each had multi-hit games for Bethany. Pitcher Ashton Dorris earned the victory, throwing all nine innings and allowing just one earned run.

The Vikings (21-14) play again Friday at 1 p.m. versus the Northland/St. Scholastica (30-4) loser. The UMAC championship is set for 6 p.m. that evening.

Duluth Minn.—The Bethany baseball team will take on Northland College at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Wade Stadium during the first round of UMAC conference play. If Bethany wins this game they will then play the winner of game two at 7 p.m. on Thursday. If the Vikings lose their first game, they will play at 4 p.m. on Thursday against the loser of game two. Fans can stay up to speed on the UMAC baseball tournament, which will feature the league's top four teams from the regular season. Baseball falls to MSU, prepares for UMAC tournament

Mankato, Minn.—Bethany Lutheran College fell to Minnesota State University, Monday, 7-3 in front of over 200 fans at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato.

MSU (25-21 overall) jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after six innings and hung on for the victory despite a late rally by BLC in the ninth inning. Eleven pitchers saw action for both schools combined. Each squad collected 12 hits in the contest.

Tyler Carlson, Pete Harstad, Travis Fluck and Jordan Miller each collected two hits in the loss. Pitcher Alex Smith received the loss for the Vikings, allowing three earned runs in 4.2 innings.

The loss is Bethany’s third in a row and fourth in their last six games.

Minnesota State honored head coach Dean Bowyer, who is retiring at the conclusion of the 2008 season.

The second-seeded Vikings (20-13, 12-6 UMAC) now prepare for the UMAC tournament which is held this weekend, May 8-10, in Duluth.


BLC baseball loses a pair to St. Scholastica

Duluth, Minn.—The Bethany baseball team traveled to Duluth this past weekend, losing both games of a doubleheader to conference-power St. Scholastica (29-4, 17-1 UMAC).

In game one the Saints won, 3-0, behind a complete game shutout by pitcher Peter Burg. The Vikings managed just two hits in the defeat. Ashton Dorris received the loss for the Vikings, despite allowing just three runs in six innings.

With the win, St. Scholastica earned their 12th-straight UMAC regular season conference title.

In game two the bats came alive for the Saints, punching out 19 hits in a 15-3 victory. Eight players had multi-hit games for St. Scholastica—this was their tenth straight victory. Justin Loehrs had two RBI for the Vikings in the loss.

The Vikings (20-12, 12-6 UMAC) close out their regular season with a game versus Minnesota State University, May 5, at Franklin Rogers Stadium in Mankato—game time is 7 p.m.


Bethany baseball splits doubleheader versus Northwestern

Mankato, Minn.—The Vikings split with conference foe Northwestern (6-18, 5-5 UMAC) Monday afternoon at home.

In game one BLC trailed 4-3 until a six-run fifth inning put them ahead for good—Vikings won 9-5. Alex Smith finished with three hits and Pete Harstad went 2-for-4 with a homer for Bethany—Travis Fluck, Trent Sonnicksen and Tyler Carlson also contributed and each had two hits for the Vikings in the victory.

In game two the Vikings led 2-1 until Northwestern scored two runs in the top-half of the sixth inning—the Eagles won 3-2. This loss snapped the Vikings nine-game winning streak. Justin Schwecke hit a solo home run in the loss for the Vikings. Pitcher Darin Hendley received the loss despite giving up only two earned runs in seven innings.

Bethany (18-10, 12-4 UMAC) hosts a doubleheader Thursday, May 1 versus North Central—games start at 2 p.m.


Vikings score 61 runs in three-game sweep

Mankato, Minn.—The BLC baseball team busted out the bats in a tripleheader versus Crown College (2-20, 0-11 UMAC) Sunday.

In game one the Vikings won 16-1. Bethany scored seven runs in the top-half of the seventh to put away the game for good. Trent Sonnicksen went 4-for-5 with two RBI and Travis Fluck went 3-for-4 with a home run in the victory. Pitcher Trevor Vaubel received the win, tossing 5 innings and allowing one run.

In game two Bethany won a slugfest, 21-16. The schools combined for 34 hits and 14 errors. Justin Loehrs had three hits on the game and Fluck and Jake Blome each hit homers for the Vikings.

In game three, the Vikings scored 15 runs in the first two innings on the way to a 24-2 victory. Bethany hit five home runs in the rout. Jordan Miller finished 3-for-3 with six RBI and Michael Greibrok threw seven innings, allowing just two earned runs for BLC.

Bethany has now won eight straight games dating back to April 15.

The Vikings (17-9, 11-3 UMAC) host a doubleheader Monday versus Northwestern College—games start at 2 p.m.


Bethany baseball knocks off Division-II power St. Cloud State

St. Cloud, Minn.—The Vikings defeated D-II St. Cloud State Wednesday at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn.

The Huskies jumped out to a commanding 8-0 lead after two innings. The Vikings didn’t go away and added four runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 9-9. Shortstop Trent Sonnicksen scored on a single by outfielder Justin Schwecke in the eighth and BLC held on for a 10-9 victory.

Sonnicksen and Tyler Carlson each finished with three hits for the Vikings—Schwecke led the attack by going 2-for-3 with four RBI, including a home run in the sixth inning. Pitcher Darin Hendley came in relief for the Vikings, throwing seven solid innings and allowing just one earned run.

Today’s game marked the fifth win in row for BLC, dating back to April 15.

St. Cloud State (21-16-1 overall) used five pitchers in the loss—nearly 400 fans attended the contest.

Bethany (14-9, 8-3 UMAC) travels to Crown College for a nine-inning game on April 25—game time is 3 p.m.


Baseball takes all three games from UM-Morris

Mankato, Minn.—The Bethany baseball team swept conference foe UM-Morris Saturday in a rare tripleheader.

In the first game the Vikings won 13-1. BLC scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away for good. Tyler Carlson had three home runs and seven RBI and Ashton Dorris threw six scoreless innings for the Vikings in the win.

In game two the Vikings scored seven runs in the first two innings and held on for a 10-0 victory. Justin Schwecke went 3-for-3 with a home run and Darin Hendley threw five scoreless innings for the Vikings.

In game three Bethany jumped out to a 7-2 lead after four innings and put the game away with a five-run fifth inning on the way to a 13-3 victory. Justin Schwecke went 3-for-4 with six RBI in the win; pitcher Alex Smith earned the victory for the Vikings.

Through 22 games, statistical leaders include Tyler Carlson (.437 BA) and Justin Schwecke (.380, 19 RBI). Pitchers Darin Hendley (3-1, 1.85 ERA) and Ashton Dorris (3.00 ERA) anchor the staff.

The Vikings (13-9, 8-3 UMAC) travel to St. Cloud State on April 23 for a non-conference game.


Baseball splits at Presentation

Aberdeen, S.D.—The Bethany baseball team managed to split a doubleheader despite large wind gusts, Tuesday at Presentation College (6-10, 1-1 UMAC).

In game one, Presentation won 3-2. BLC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Presentation answered back—scoring one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Outfielder Alex Smith went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Vikings and pitcher Ashton Dorris received the loss, despite allowing just two earned runs in six innings.

In game two the Vikings won in 11 innings, 1-0. With one out in the 11th, Jimmy Olson doubled—scoring Tyler Carlson and giving BLC the lead for good.

Carlson and Pete Harstad each finished with two hits for the Vikings and pitcher Darin Hendley received a no-decision—allowing zero runs and just three hits in eight innings.

BLC (11-8, 5-3) is home again this Friday versus UM-Morris—game time is 3 p.m.


Baseball splits doubleheader versus Martin Luther

New Ulm, Minn.—The Vikings traveled to New Ulm Wednesday to play Martin Luther College, splitting a doubleheader.

In game one, MLC won 4-3. Bethany jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Knights answered right back—scoring three runs in the bottom-half of the third inning. MLC scored in the bottom-half of the sixth and held on for the victory.

Shortstop Greg Holzhueter went 3-for-3 for the Knights in the victory. Catcher Jordan Miller went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Vikings.

In game two, BLC won 4-3. This time the Knights jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Vikings stormed back to tie the game at 3-3 through six innings. Tyler Carlson hit a two-out triple and scored the game-winning run on a Justin Schwecke single in the top-half of the seventh.

Schwecke, Justin Loehrs and Trent Sonnicksen each finished with two hits for BLC in the victory. Michael Greibrok threw six innings, allowing just two earned runs for the victory.

Bethany (9-8, 4-2 UMAC) travels to Presentation College on April 15; note their April 11 game versus Northwestern has been cancelled and the April 12 doubleheader versus Northwestern has been moved to April 28.


Baseball defeats Martin Luther in home opener

Mankato, Minn.—The Vikings squared off against rival Martin Luther College Tuesday at home, winning 7-6 in a nine-inning game.

Bethany jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings. Martin Luther, however, tied the game at 6-6 in top-half of the eighth when Steve Gurgel hit a three-run homer—his second home run of the contest. Travis Fluck scored on an Alex Smith single in the bottom-half of the inning and Bethany held onto the lead for good. Pitcher Bryan Beisell picked up the victory in relief, going 1.2 innings and allowing no hits.

Justin Schwecke had his fourth consecutive multi-hit game for the Vikings and Jake Blome went 3-for-4 with an RBI; Nick Johnson had two hits as well. BLC managed to win despite four errors.

The Vikings (8-7, 3-1 UMAC) travel to New Ulm to face Martin Luther again Wednesday at 2 p.m.
