Mankato, Minn.—The Bethany men’s baseball team finished the season with a 22-15 record, including a 12-6 record to place them second within the regular season Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play. The Vikings faced some tough competition this year. Head Coach, Ryan Kragh said “Going 2 for 3 against NCAA Division II competition was a great feeling this year.” The team also boasted a10 game winning streak in the later part of the season. Five individuals earned All-Conference recognition, with two others making the honorable mention. The team also placed second in the conference tournament with four individuals making the All-Tournament team (Dorris, Harstad, Smith, and Schwecke).

Individual All-Conference awards went to hitters Pete Harstad, Tyler Carlson, and Justin Schwecke. Harstad (Mankato, Minn./ Mankato East) led the team during his junior campaign with a .410 batting average and batted in 28 RBI’s with 12 doubles and four home runs. Senior Tyler Carlson (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) led the team with 40 runs scored and 47 hits. He also put up a .402 batting average with 27 RBI’s. Sophomore Justin Schwecke (Buffalo Lake, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop) led the team in some offensive categories as well, hitting five triples, totaling 82 bases, and knocking in 38 RBI’s in 36 games played. Schwecke and Carlson both hit five home runs throughout the season, but senior Travis Fluck (Redwood Falls, Minn./Ridgewater CC) led the team at the end of the year with six. Trent Sonnicksen (Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area), the Vikings’ freshman shortstop, earned honorable mention and was awarded UMAC Rookie of the Year honors. He hit .350 on the year and scored 35 runs.

The team’s defense played behind two All-Conference pitchers. Darin Hendley (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) started seven games and pitched in nine. He finished with a record of 4-2 with a great 2.67 ERA. Hendley struck out 40 batters in 54 innings and failed to give up a home run in any of his appearances. Ashton Dorris (Cassville, Mo./Iowa Central CC) also earned the All-Conference award for his pitching. Dorris started 10 games and appeared in 11. He posted a 3-4 record with a 4.05 ERA. He struck out a batter an inning, striking out 60 batters in 60 innings.

Alex Smith (Crystal, Minn./Dakota County Tech) also earned honorable mention in the UMAC conference. He ate up innings as a third starter and hit .306 as the Vikings’ lead-off hitter and center fielder.

“I am going to miss the seniors that we lose this year,” said Kragh. “They were the first kids that I recruited here at Bethany, and they have helped to build this program at the Division III level for Bethany. They are great kids, students, teammates, and citizens.”

The Vikings will be strong on the mound next year and look to use their depth and young players to build on a great 2008 season.
